Celestron Nexstar 5SE
The Celestron Nexstar 5SE telescope belongs to the Celestron NexStar SE (special edition) series which is known for the high-quality finish of the telescopes and the use of very good hand-picked optics. This certainly applies to the Celestron NexStar 5SE; this telescope is a Schmidt-Cassegrain design with a 125mm primary mirror. This mirror captures approximately 40% more light than a similar mirror with a 102mm diameter. Its catadioptric construction gives the Celestron Nexstar 5SE a focal length of 1250mm, which is a bit shorter than the focal length of the Nexstar 4SE. Compared to the 4SE, magnification with this telescope is less high. However, the shorter focal length does result in less light being lost. A StarPointer Red Dot finderscope is mounted on the Celestron Nexstar 5SE  telescope which serves to quickly retrieve celestial bodies.

Celestron Nexstar 5SE

Eyepiece

The telescope comes with a 25mm eyepiece which is suitable for any eyepiece fitting with a 1.25 inch diameter. In combination with the focal length of this telescope it is possible to get a magnification of 50 times. Also included is a StarDiagonal (erecting eyepiece) to turn the image upright. So, you can even use the telescope as a spotting scope for terrestrial observations!

Legendary Orange

The striking orange NexStar SE telescopes are inspired by the legendary ''Orange'' telescopes of Celestron as experts will undoubtedly know. In the world of astronomy no other colour is as 'famous' as the orange colour of Celestron. The new orange NexStar telescopes are a tribute to the orange Celestron C8 telescopes which were produced from the 1960s up to the 1980s. During the 1980s Celestron switched to a "cool" glossy black colour leading to the disappearance of the famous orange telescopes. 25 years later 0Celestron brings the new orange NexStar telescopes on the market to revive the good old days and continue the Celestron tradition. Hail to the colour orange!

GoTo functionality

The telescope and mount have a full GoTo system. With this very useful system, the telescope will automatically find celestial objects for you. In the system 40,000 celestial objects are preprogrammed which makes watching with this telescope easier and a lot of fun. The GoTo features Celestron SkyAlign alignment technology which will align the telescope in seconds. It is also possible to find celestial bodies yourself and save them for next time so you can focus on these objects. The GoTo system provides detailed information on the 200 most-viewed celestial bodies. The GoTo is easy to operate by a remote control with LED display.

About the tripod

The tripod that comes with the NexStar SE has an altazimuth mount on very strong stainless steel legs. This tripod is very easy to collapse or to set up. The stand has a motor that is fully computer-controlled. With this convenient tracking motor you can easily continue to follow objects in the universe. For astrophotographers such a tripod is highly recommended. The tracking motor of the tripod is powered by AA batteries (not included).

Mirror and coating

The 125mm mirror is equipped with Celestron's Starbright XLT coatings. Due to the coating used, the absorbed light is more evenly distributed, making the light output higher and the image sharper. The coating consists of several layers; Celestron have used aluminium, titanium and magnesium to make a coating as strong and effective as possible.

Great little telescope

I bought this scope to replace my 200p dobsonian. Despite being a great telescope, the dobsonian was too big, heavy and complicated to set up for me. The 5SE is easy to set up and small enough to carry around in a small suitcase. Image quality is good for this size (it's worth buying a high quality eyepiece). The alignment is quick and easy as you only need to use the alt-azi setup for viewing. If you want to try astrophotography, you need to use the equatorial setup which is a little more involved, but still easy enough. The tripod has a silly spring and washer to hold the plate/lens holder. The spring is really not necessary and I glued the washer to the fixing screw, making thing much easier! All in all a great value scope. Highly recommended.

What kind of observations do you primarily do (or are you planning to do) with your telescope?

Planetary, deep space, photography.

Pluses
  • Small and portable
  • Easy set up
  • Good value for money
Downsides
  • Needs a good eyepiece
  • Vibration could be an issue for photography

My New Toy - Celestron Nexstar5SE

Having owned a manual 3" Reflector and had many hours of sky viewing I felt confident enough to to upgrade as I found it impossible to get cameras accessories to fit. Limited funds prevented me from purchasing a mountain top deep space observatory and anyway living in a Town I wanted to get to where the the skys are dark so required absolute portability. With Cost, portability and ease of use and ease set up I plumbed for the Nexstar5SE as appeared to meet all my needs, I haven't been dissapointed. Planetary, Lunar (with the aid of a borrowed reducer) are great. With great views of Jupiter and Saturn though I had to get up very early to view. Do practice setting up as it can be quite fiddly to tighten up onto the tripod and is annoying when attempting to line up the screw fittings in twilight and its well below freezing. I have attempted to get some deep space views but still learning. Even as a terrestial telescope it has excellent definition even at the highest magnification. PS use the diagonal for this it drives you potty looking at the world upside down.

What kind of observations do you primarily do (or are you planning to do) with your telescope?

Deep Space and Planetary astro photography
