The main pros and cons in a nutshell

Celestron CPC 1100 XLT Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope

The Celestron CPC 1100 XLT Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope is the cream among the telescopes. The Celestron CPC 1100 XLT telescope has full GoTo functionality and is equipped with a GPS receiver. It is very easy to align and has an ergonomic design. Moreover, this Celestron telescope is easy to (de)mount and transport. With the Celestron CPC 1100 telescope it is possible to view detailed images of the surface of Jupiter and Mars: even Uranus, Pluto and Neptune are within reach.

GPS

The GPS receiver automatically downloads the time and data of satellites orbiting around the earth and it determines your exact position on earth wherever you are. It is now no longer necessary to manually enter the date, time, longitude and latitude.

Alignment

Once the internal GPS receiver has determined your location, it is very easy to align the telescope. Just use the remote control to manually aim the Celestron CPC 1100 telescope at three celestial bodies. You don't even need to know the names of these bodies; you can even use the moon or bright stars for this. When the telescope is aligned, the remote control gives you access to any catalogue in the user-friendly database (40.000 objects).

CPC Database

The Celestron CPC 1100 database contains more than 40.000 celestial bodies and objects, including Messier objects, the Caldwell catalogue, NGC constellations, nebula and planets. A special identifying function tells you what you look at but you can also take a tour of the sky. For example, you can aim the telescope in a certain direction, let it identify the Messier objects and the Celestron CPC 1100 automatically shows you the five nearest objects; that is GoTo for you!

CPC 1100

The size/bulk takes a bit of getting used to, and requires significant effort to move whilst on its tripod. Only had it for a few days, and no clear night yet.

What kind of observations do you primarily do (or are you planning to do) with your telescope?

Planets

Pluses
  • Go to system is easy to use.
  • Ease of use in setting up.
  • Bright images.
Downsides
  • Fairly heavy, can only be safely moved by separating from tripod.

Celestron CPC 1100

The telescope came in two sturdy packages. There was some minor external damage but nothing much. Assembly was very straight-forward and well-explained in the enclosed literature. Setting up for use is very easy and didn't take long. The alignment procedures are intuitive and are well-explained in the booklet. Note that the controller described in the manual is not the one supplied - this is a newer version and you should use the instructions enclosed with it in conjunction with those in the manual. The telescope tracks well even with the simplest 'one object' alignment, but do make sure you level the tripod carefully before alignment. The telescope was well-collimated on delivery and this did not need adjustment. Image quality is excellent, but you will need a good range of eyepieces to make full use of this. I am sure the best quality eyepieces will not be wasted on this instrument! Two things to point out: 1. The instrument is quite noisy when slewing, surprisingly so! 2. The tripod is easily managed but the telescope itself is VERY HEAVY. The integral handles are useful but this 'scope is a serious monster! If you ahve problems lifting things then this telescope will need a permanent installation (as mine will soon have). Overall, an excellent instrument and reasonably priced when compared with similar instruments from both within the Celestron range and with other makes. Highly recommended! Clear skies.

Pluses
  • Good GOTO and tracking accuracy.
  • Intuitive computer control.
  • Easy to set up.
  • Excellent optical quality.
Downsides
  • Somewhat noisy when slewing (a minor niggle).
  • VERY heavy!
