Tripod & mounts
These accessories ensure your telescope is height adjustable as well as adjustable in degrees. Our tripods form a rock-solid base for your viewing night! Our tripods are also available with tracking motor for automatic polar alignment, Autostar with 30,000 pre-programmed objects and GoTo module.
There are two types of tripods: tripods with an alt-azimuth mount and tripods with a parallactic (or equatorial) mount. We recommend the latter type for the more advanced viewer.
The altazimuth mount is the standard type of mount. This mount consists of a horizontal and a vertical axis. The advantage here is that its movements are very natural. In addition, the telescope can quickly be positioned in the right direction. However, the altazimuth mount does have a drawback as stars arc across the sky. In order to be able to follow the stars in the sky, you will have to move the telescope about two axes. This is not so bad with low magnifications, but with higher magnifications it does become a bit of a problem. In addition, you will need two motors for astrophotography.
The equatorial mount has two axes as well: the RA axis and the DEC axis. The RA axis is particularly useful here. With this mount the polar axis is aimed at the polar star (so aligned to the North). This means that you only need to track on one axis. This is especially handy when you want high magnifications and work with longer shutter times. Another advantage: this type of mount only requires one tracking motor. Handling the equatorial mount does require a bit of patience, certainly when working with an erecting prism.
A tripod may be made of various materials. Tripods made of synthetic materials are cheaper than metal or aluminium tripods. The advantage of a heavier tripod (and mount) is that less trembling occurs, allowing stars and planets to stay in your field of view when turning the telescope. In addition, a heavier tripod is able to carry bigger and heavier telescope tubes.
