Counterweights

Counterweights are recommended when using a dew cap, a camera adapter and camera and/or bigger eyepieces. A counterweight enables you to arrive at the right balance. This is especially applicable for Schmidt and Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes. Counterweights are available in weights ranging from 1 to 4.5 kilos.

As it happens, the motors of the telescope are likely to incur damage when the telescope is not balanced right. In addition, focusing precision will decrease considerably if the equipment is not balanced. Furthermore, ‘freezing’ the image is next to impossible when the balance is not right as it will take a considerable amount of time for minor image trembles to subside. Needless to say, you’d better make sure that your telescope is balanced on both sides.
